 Public Art That Surrounds Us

        Godspeed readers of mine.

Jersey City is a city supporting its artists,  you walk out and see many different types of art on each corner. Every piece has its own style, color, and aesthetic to it, you begin to see more artwork on almost every corner, tall buildings that are not made out of glass or reflective have some sort of art piece on them commissioned by the city.

I shall be talking about a piece that I see on a daily base, especially growing up. It is one of my favorite pieces going down Central avenue, and this avenue has many pieces of work as you walk through it. It is a bit hidden unless you turn your head as you cross the street to look at it or are walking down this block this is the “Splash of Color” by Ed Morris located on Franklin Street and Central Avenue. This is a koi fish mural that drones the side of a drug pharmacy. The way Morris captures the movement of the fish swimming is definitely a refreshing sight to see on those sizzling summer days. The koi fishes are extremely colorful using bright colors such as white, orange, yellow, red, and light shades of blue to help define the fin in a contrast to the dark background they are put in. "These fish are not only beautiful and tranquil to behold, but their unique and individual coloring in many ways reflects the diversity of the people I've lived with all my life in Jersey City Heights," Morris, a lifelong Heights resident, said in a statement.” the atmosphere of the background really does make you look like your look into the dark ponds they swim in. with the koi fish swimming in a movement poses it truly does give a sense of tranquility.

The second piece was made by a Brazilian artist named Eduardo Kobra, who created a mural of the iconic pop star David Bowie. This mural is extremely colorful compared to the koi fish, he used different patterns and colors to style Bowie. It is also a much larger mural taking up 180 feet of the side of a building, this is the larger sprayed-painted mural done by a team in the Guinness World Record Book. “Like his David Bowie piece, Kobra incorporates a "kaleidoscope theme" with bright colors and bold lines”. It is honestly one of my favorite features because I love looking at kaleidoscopes, the color, and different shapes you see on this mural really command your eyes to really look a this. Go through it really examining every detail you see as you start from top to bottom or bottom to top. This mural demands your attention from how the colors pop out to you to the feature and detail of Bowie’s face. Comparing this to the koi fish mural, the fish have more of a mutated color plate,  Kobra made this to be meant to catch your attention and have the color and design pop at you, it wants you to examine it. Both artworks have their own vibe to them, one peaceful while the other jumps at you, and it just shows had diverse the art in Jersey City is. Go walk around and check there and more artwork around Jersey City. Chau!
